Southeast Volusia Chamber Surf Contest

Thank you all for participating in the Third Annual Surf contest for the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce!

Your SEV Chamber is hard at work every day promoting economic development and supporting local businesses in our community through our advocacy, educational, and connection initiatives. We hope you and your team enjoy a “business day at the beach” of fun, surf, and charity … A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit Ocean’s of Hope!
 

EVENT INFO:
LOCATION:               NSB Inlet!!!
DATE:                        Friday, August 18th, 2023
CONTEST TIME:      9am-4pm 
AFTER PARTY:         On THE BEACH Immediately following the Finals Heat.
 

·      ACCESS:  The Beach Ramps Open at 8am!  Please use the Beach Way ramp to get to the Inlet!  You will need to have a beach pass for entry.
 
·      ARRIVAL:  Two hours prior to your Heat start time!!! (1st Heat, please arrive at 8:15am). Points will be deducted if you are late! Don’t forget to check the tide schedule.
 
Up to 6 teams will surf in heats each hour starting at 9am.  The team with the highest score for each heat will surf again in the Finals Heat from 2-3 pm (pending no delays).  The team with the highest score in the Finals Heat wins the trophy AND BRAGGING RIGHTS!  
Get your team of 4 surfers together.  You do not have to be an avid surfer to participate!  If there is a minor (child under 18) surfing on your team, the waiver must be signed by a legal guardian.  Each surfer MUST sign the waiver and it MUST be on file with the Chamber. Surfers will NOT be allowed to participate without the waiver.  
 

DAY OF INSTRUCTIONS

GENERAL LOGISTICS:
 
·      Provide the name of your “DOUBLE WHAMMY” Surfer for your team.
·      Give your team line up.  This is final and cannot be changed after you check in.
·      Please arrive at the contest site at least two hours prior to your heat start time.  Points will be deducted if you are late! Don’t forget to check the tide schedule.
·      Check-in at the SHARK CITY MEDIA “Check in tent” next to the scaffolding.
·      IF YOUR HEAT STARTS AT 9AM, PLEASE ARRIVE BY 8:15AM SO THAT WE CAN START ON TIME.
·      Be aware of HIGH TIDE.  Make sure your team can get on the beach in time for your heat.
·      Staff members and volunteers will be available on the beach should you have questions or need assistance.
·      Please do not park in the event area (where the tents are).  Please give yourself time to get down to the Inlet, park, and check in at least two hours before your start time.  
·      All members of your team must be at the Inlet to check in.
·      Please report to the FLAGS next to the judges scaffolding 20 minutes prior to your heat start time.
 
 
TROPHY: 
A special thank you to Josh Randall for creating the custom-built surfboard trophy!  Congratulations to Go Juice ~ our trophy winners from last year!  Who will be the team with bragging rights this year?  
AFTER PARTY:  
The after party and awards ceremony will be on the beach this year! We will have a hospitality garden located on the beach all day. Your team registration includes 2 drink tickets and a wristband for the hospitality garden area.  Additional wristbands can be purchased for $20 each. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be served in the hospitality garden and food provided during the awards ceremony. 

HEAT STRUCTURE: 
·      Each team will have a different colored jersey.  There are 4 jerseys per team.  
·      Each person on your team should put on a jersey while your team is in the water.
·      Return all jerseys to the FLAGS for the team in the next Heat to use.  
 
HEAT 1:     9:00-10:00am           HEAT 2:      10:00-11:00am         HEAT 3:    11:00am-12:00pm             
HEAT 4:     12:00-1:00pm            HEAT 5:      1:00-2:00pm             FINALS HEAT: 2:00-3:00pm 
 
CONTEST RULES:
·      Each team will have 1 hour in the water.  All 4 team members must get in the water within the hour. Once each surfer is done, they cannot get back in the water during the heat.  Once you’ve surfed, you are done!
·      1 person on your team will be designated as the “DOUBLE WHAMMY” surfer.  This surfer can throw both hands up in the air to claim 1 wave for DOUBLE POINTS on that ride.
·      Each surfer will have 3 waves scored by each of the 3 judges.
·      Judges will score each wave on a scale of 1 – 10 (.5 increments).  They will score all waves for each team.  
o   INTERFERENCE:  If a surfer interferes with another surfer, the judge will identify the specific wave and surfer on their scorecard.  The interfering surfer will have 1 point deducted, and the surfer that was interfered on will have 1 point added to their score. 
·      The top 4 waves, 1 from each surfer on the team, will be tallied by our Scorer and will automatically calculate our heat leaders.  
·      Surfers must tag the next surfer before entering the water.  Points will be deducted if you get in the water before your teammate makes it to the beach.
·      The 4th or Final surfer from each team must be on the sand at the end of the heat.
·      THE WINNING TEAMS FROM HEATS 1 - 5 WILL SURF IN THE FINALS HEAT FOR THE TITLE OF 2023 SURF TEAM CHAMPS!
