Josh’s Story:

Army Sgt. Josh Wetzel served our country with honor and bravery. On May 31, 2012, during a deployment to Afghanistan, Sgt. Wetzel was severely injured when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) while leading his platoon on a mission. In an instant, Josh lost both legs and sustained countless injuries to his arms and hands requiring immediate medical evacuation. This began a 2 year recovery at  Walter Reed Hospital.  Determined to continue on with his life, Josh medically retired and was released from the hospital with his wife, Paige, and 9 month old daughter, Harper, who was born at Walter Reed. The family relocated to Auburn, AL in 2014. In 10 years, Josh landed a great job, had another daughter (Payton), and finished his degree; but struggled daily to improve his quality of life as the fear of the seemingly inevitable loomed over him: being completely wheelchair bound.

On September 25th 2023 Josh found what he had been looking for. A new sense of community, physical independence, renewed strength and a  confidence was discovered at Irontribe Auburn. Josh trusted the staff and their promises to help him avoid physical deterioration with the plan to WALK both daughters down the aisle one day and share a dance with his wife at the reception. Through fitness, he discovered a path to recovery he never knew possible and he found a supportive network that empowered him to overcome obstacles and inspire others.

Join us in honoring this man and his family that have sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom!
