I'm raising money for the Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA) because it is the local organization I depend on to support me/my family.
In 2003, at the age of two-and-a-half, we would learn that my son, Philip, was diagnosed with Autism. A life-long disorder with no road map, no prognosis, and no sure outcome. All I could think of was "Will I ever hear my son say, "Mommy." My perfect little boy with my eyes, and his father's hair, just screamed. I was devastated and didn't know what to do. I felt alone. Then I met another "Autism mom," who told me about the Autism Society of Greater Akron. I started to volunteer and found support, guidance, and help.
In 2009, I became the board president of the all-volunteer organization and we made the decision that as volunteers, we couldn't provide the programs and services needed in our community. In 2011, I founded and lead our first walk and 5k, raising $65,000 that first year. I literally cried as 1000 people came to support us at Lock 3 and we were all so happy to find each other.
I also left my full-time career in public relations to be the first staff person hired to lead this amazing organization. One of my first initiatives was a "Newly Diagnosed Guide" so another parent would know where to begin after walking out of the doctor's office. We've also accomplished so much more because of donors who cared.
As Philip's Fans, we have raised over $20,000 for our team. Thank you to all of our donors and team members over the years. We felt your love and support. AND, I did hear "Mommy" in the speech therapists office. Once again tears for small victories and because of ASGA and the many parents I have met over the years, I have also learned to cherish and share those moments.
We still need each other. We still need the Autism Society of Greater Akron. As I plan for the next chapter, I look at all that we have accomplished together and am excited to see this next chapter of ASGA. Thank you for the memories and donations, Philip's Fans!
