"The ability to be social is essential to human existence. This skill has solidified over time through evolution, for very good reasons. When you have autism, you are missing this basic function. The part of the brain that controls social understanding is missing. And it sucks." (stated by my son, Jacobi James Briscoe, when he was 16)
Isolation and depression are huge factors in the life of autistic people. My son feels like he was born on the wrong planet, because he doesn't know how to socialize in the way that most of us do. He feels different, excluded, unable to be his true self.
Inclusion matters. All people need to feel welcomed into all spaces. I wish it wasn't necessary for organizations to teach this to the world, but it is. This is why I continue to be involved with Autism Alliance of NENY.
Thank you for supporting the Autism Alliance of Northeastern NY!
